Yoga Sutra 1.1 Atha yoga-anushasanam.
Now—not tomorrow, not when you feel “ready,” and not when life gets quiet—now begins the practice of yoga.
Atha Yoga Anushasanam (अथ योगानुशासनम्)
Atha: Now; in this immediate moment.
Yoga: Union; alignment of mind, body, and spirit.
Anu: Followed with devotion; a continuous, sacred journey.
Shasanam: Instruction; discipline, self-governance.
The legendary sage Patanjali chose his very first word with deliberate precision. He didn’t begin his timeless text with abstract philosophy or complex physical poses. He began with Atha—Now.
Most people spend their lives waiting for the “right time” to transform. They say, “I will start when my stress clears up,” or “I will focus on myself once everything else is settled.” Patanjali’s first line is a gentle, uncompromising reality check: the ideal moment does not exist.
Yoga—and true change—does not require a perfect environment; it requires a decision. “Atha” is a declaration that your journey starts in whatever state you currently find yourself: tired, distracted, uncertain, or raw. Every breath you take is a fresh invitation to arrive in the present moment and take ownership of your life.
The word Anushasanam carries equal weight. It is not rigid punishment, but loving self-discipline. It is the commitment to show up for yourself day after day, honoring the small, quiet choices that build inner strength over time.
You do not need to have it all figured out. You only need to step into this moment with intention. Now is where your power lives. Now is where you begin.
Let’s practice together. Group and private yoga classes.
