
Yoga offers many levels of intensity, from gentle and soothing to dynamic, powerful, and invigorating. At its core, all yoga practice focuses on internal work. Whether holding a forward bend for ten minutes or performing Sun Salutations for 10 minutes, the common thread is observing the breath, mind, energetic and physical sensations. Using our intelligence like this can challenge the nervous system, requiring focus and presence for the duration of the practice. By continually exploring the boundaries of mind and body, yoga becomes a transformative journey.
When energy levels are low, gentle yoga, meditation, or pranayama can shift tamasic qualities to sattvic, bringing us clarity and calm. On the other hand, when feeling restless or overly energised, vinyasa, pranayama, and meditation can channel rajasic energy towards sattvic balance. Though the paths vary, the destination remains the same: Samadhi.
This movement of energy influences our choices. We might want to skip heavy dinners, knowing our liver will resist twists and compressions in early morning practice, or choose to spend time in nature and solitude over habitual socialising or shopping. In this way, yoga liberates us from external restrictions, empowering us to shape our surroundings creatively.
Yoga is a deep dive into the self. Unlike courses or universities that award diplomas, yoga rewards us by revealing new layers and treasures with every practice, uncovering our vast inner world. By honouring our teachers both present and ancestral and our shared connection to the Divine, yoga becomes a living practice.
